Deepavali or also known as the ‘festival of lights’ is mainly observed by the Indian community. In celebration of the joyous festival, small oil lamps called diyas will be lit up as it is believed to guide the deceased relatives to come back and visit their families on earth. While the diyas are lit, firecrackers will be set as the sound of the explosion is believed to ward off evil spirits.
As one of the major annual cultural festivals in Singapore, the streets of Little India will once again be decked with rows of colourful lights and giant fixtures such as lanterns and 20m-tall peacocks!
To witness the colourful scene, ride along Serangoon Road and Race Course Road where you will be mesmerized by the dazzling fixtures and lights and since you are in the area, be sure to catch live performances and participate in the traditional games available such as marble game, “Goli” and board game, “Pachisi”.
Besides the fun and games, shop to your heart’s content at the shopping bazaar - Festival Village on Campbell Lane and Hastings Road where there will be a variety of stalls offering Indian ethnic wear, costume jewellery, ornamental decorations, greeting cards, traditional sweets and delicacies, festive cookies, henna and more.
